Well Wednesday has come and gone. Mallard wasn't frozen over unlike carpark and half of swan lake!!
As expected I blanked once again with the only signs of life being what looked to be a very small carp pop it's head out less than half a rod length out and a LOT of bubbles for a few minutes.
I dropped a rig very near to it but without any luck!!
On this occasion I was able to learn a little about my rigs and pva set up (on testing close in) and was happy with it all......
Just gotta locate them carp!!
Until the next session.....!!

It feels like its been forever...... But I'm planning a day session on mallard tomorrow!!
I think I'm gonna try the old faithful boilie pop up with a small scattering of freebies approach with a cheeky zig on the side!
Weather forecast for 13deg and overcast!!
Fingers crossed for my first carp of 2012 and hopefully my first carp outta mallard in over 2 years (it would be only my second ever out of that lake too!!)
I'll let you know how I get on.......

Well another session on Mallard and this time I bagged one..... In the oddest of fashions!! Firstly I set out, after spotting a fish topping, to fish from peg 4 in the tree line! I fired a solid bad at the area the carp showed, and set the other rod to a zig at about 3 feet. Nothing really happened until about 2.15pm when the zig had a small knock, then about a minute later went off. The lead dumped on the take (using the inline drop off system) and I could feel a really odd fight, mostly like the line flicking over fins etc.... It didn't feel big at all, and after a minute came off..... I'm guessing if may have been foul hooked!! About 3pm I noticed on the other rod, (which I re-bagged with a solidz and cast randomly out in front of me), it's line was tight.... Assuming the bird life had been the reason I let off some slack, but it stayed tight!! I picked up and reeled into it and could barely feel the fish which was there. I carried on and eventually starting to pull in a MASSIVE pile of canadian weed, and it felt like the carp was in it, so I netted it...... Or so I thought!! Basically I had hooked the line the Carp and the weed was attached to, so I hand pulled the carp in and netted it. I was APPALLED at the state of the lead core rig the carp was tethered to! (see pic) The beads were solid and there was no way the hook link was ever coming off in my opinion!! So I have finally caught another from Mallard of about 9lbs (although my battery scales were knackered when I got them out). The hardest part was taking my own pic with the camera timer!! Conclusion: Yes I caught a carp, and it MAY have been my new PB (currently only 10lbs), but I gave it a 9lbs at a guess. However I didn't hook it with my rig...... So I'm not really over the moon with today's session!! Attachments:

landed a 26 common from roman last year in similar circumstances...i,e..it was trailing line which got tangled with mine. in this case it was just the hooklink, swivel and a length of line so lead discharge had worked. however...the hook had been passed back and was actually just poking out from its gill cover....god knows how that happenned. would have been my PB common at the time but i didnt claim it as it wasnt my hook in its mouth.
anyway...back to your fish dash...good job it got tangled with your gear else it could have died. there was something similar on elsons a couple of years back and there were going to be random rig checks introduced by bailiffs...however im not sure if this was ever done.
come on Stanwick management....now u have 3 big carp day ticket waters on site (elsons, mallard and swan)...with varying competences of anglers fishing them....fish welfare has got to take a front seat.
looking at the rules on the main website...maybe some new ones need introducing..AND ENFORCING...such as unhooking mats for all anglers on the above named waters....42" landing nets too...there are 20's(at least) in all these waters

I'm with you nookie on the 'mat thing' mate, defo. It's not about putting 'another carp on the bank'
Maybe 'on the mat instead'

Well not quite as in depth as I was hoping to do this, but update on my last session!!
I did 4 days Thursday April 26 - Sunday and it rained the whole time!
Basically I camped on the left side of 'Beach' swim and attacked my chosen spots with spod mix and boilies, opting for fake corn on the rig.
Night one and I was up at 4.30am landing a lovely common at 14lb 3oz (horribly close to my target of a 15lber this year!)
And after that, not a knock...... atlthough carp were leaping out over my area every day about 4pm!!
And that was that!!!
