Intro......
The idea of this is to update on my 2012 mission of 'tear Mallard apart'
Mallard is down as a 'runs' water but the few times I've fished it I have struggled to say the least!!
I will hopefully be spending as much time as I can on this lake with the aim to make it a runs water for me and to beat my PB!
My PB currently stands with a 10lb mirror caught on Mallard about 2 years ago..... The only fish I've ever caught on mallard!!
Im taking the plunge by getting myself a season ticket (to guilt the missus into signing my pass out a bit more often!) and hoping this will be a good year for my fishing!!
A bit about me..... I'm David, I'm 31 with a wife and a son, and another due in July.
I used to fish from the age of about 11 until I was probably 15/16 at ecton gravel pits (before it was syndicate only).
Restarted again about 2/3 years ago after packing in playing football and have had limited time to actually get in the bank. Even though I live exactly 1 mile from the lakes!!
I'm always open to comments and suggestions and I'm not scared to ask a stupid/obvious question!!
So that's it!!!
This will all get going after my first 24 hours of 2012 this weekend (where I see the temps will drop to freezing overnight!!)
Let the battle commence!!!!

I spent a few hours last night sorting my rods into my new rod bag. That should now save me time on the bank as they can now be stored made up!!
I wasn't overly impressed when I woke this morning to a thick layer of frost on the car..... Looks like I'll literally be chilling out this weekend!!
As for tactics, I'm planning on starting with a couple of zigs at maybe 2ft and 4ft and see what happens, with a roving rod on standby using PVA bags of maggots and casters.
I'm sure something will change over the weekend and I'll be back on here Sunday evening telling my story!!
Tonight I will mostly be tying and testing rigs I think!!!

Right then, heres what happened!!
I turned up on the Saturday and had a wander round Mallard. It was virtually empty with a couple of guys set up from about 8am (nothing caught) and a bivvy with a few lads who been the all night without sucess.
I couldn't see any fish, so looked to see which way the wind was blowing (as I had some advice to fish with the cold wind off my back) and true to form there wasn't a breath of it!! I think thats the first time i've seen Mallard that still!
So I ended up picking a swim about mid point in the lake to give me a good wide area of attack!!
I set two rods up on zigs of about 3 and 5 foot, and popped a solid bag of maggots/caster out on the 3rd.
I got all of my kit set up and sorted and after a couple hours with nothing showing and no indications, re-cast the zigs to different spots!
For the night I cast all 3 rods out onto what felt like shallow silk weed with a hardish bottom underneath (all different areas), all with a small bag and slow sinking hook baits.
The night was harsh to say the least, temps down to -5ish and ice inside the bivvy!! I was awoken about 6.30 after a very restless and fishless night by my bite alarm sounding a few beebs, only to find a Robin playing trampoline on my rod!
That was about all I had in terms of fishing action, so by midday I was packed up ready for home when I saw a few lads piking.......
After a quick dash home I swapped the carp gear for my very limited pike setup up and popped back for a few more hours.
By the end of it I still had nothing to show of it!!!
I was happy with my rigs and my set up, so hopefully it was just a case of being in the wrong place!!!
What did I learn from this....... keep the gas for the stove warm at all costs, and that it was very very cold, but I can survive it so i'll do it again!!!

Well it looks as if my next session will be a short day on Weds 1st Feb, this has given me a whole new dilemma on my 'limited time' approach.....
In my mind I need to keep the gear light and stay mobile, but what to do for bait???
I'm thinking sweetcorn, salted and pva bagged with fake corn popups, and maybe some sort of pellet with a small boilie popup on the other rod!?
My initial thoughts are to fish only singles with a bag attached/solid bags and find the fish and stick with them.
If (which is more likely going to happen) I cannot see any signs of the fish, then I will fish in almost a nomadic style..... Moving swims every hour or two, looking for a bite!!
I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do but as I will literally be there from 8-dusk, it seems a fair plan to me!
My biggest worry is the thing with staying mobile, I really struggle to reduce the kit I need..... I know I usually take too much, but struggle to see what is excess, this is another thing I will need to take a look at!!!
I will update nearer the time..... Or after the session with my progress...........

Well after a cheeky chat with somebody who is far superior in fishing knowledge to me, I have decided to slightly change tactics.
I was advised that the nomadic approach was a good idea and to fish with my tips up, if I get liners then to fish closer and closer in until I get the bites!
Also I advised to make up a mix of boilie crumb, bread crumb, maybe a bit of groundbait. Fish a 10mm bright one on the hook. Also to avoid pellets!
It appears I was kinda on the right track..... But happy to take advice from people I trust and have more experience!!
Tackle shop needs a visit I think!!!

Hi mate. its reall easy to cut your kit down, even more so on day trips....
Ive just done mine like this............
3 rod bag with 2 rods, landing net and 2 banksticks with alarms. Thats 1 item. small tackle bag with tackle for one day plus tea making gear. Thats item number 2. bucket with bait in and thats also your seat for the day. item number 3. unhooking mat. In total thats 4 items in all mate. bosh it all on the trolly job done!

Ok then, I have finalised my tactics for wednesday.....
White choc boilie crumb with bread crumb and a bit of milk powder with a 10mm popup in white choc on 1 rod.
Rod 2 will be the same as rod one except I'll be swapping the milk powder with rum!!
Still sticking with the new spot/swim every hour or so......
Next update will be how I got on!!!
