Alright guys, came to Stanwick and fished Mallard the other day for the first time & love the place! Only a day session though and thought I should start doing nights as well. I'm an 18 year old lad and final exams finish on the 20th so I'd like to do a few longer sessions on Mallard and possible Elsons this Summer. Been fishing since I could walk but only recently started properly carp fishing, since I could drive last year really ;D Anyway, as I've never done nights before, is there anything I should know or any tips thatll come in handy? Currently scraping the student shrapnel together to upgrade most of my kit so I'll need to rinse my account for anything I'll need for nights but it's worth it imo ;D So any tips or things I should know for doing nights would be much appreciated!
Thanks, Indy.

Most importantly mate..... Keep warm and dry!! So half decent bivvy, bedchair and bag are worth looking at! (The expensive bit). Warm clothes and a change of clothes just in case!! Then food and drinks. So a little stove, kettle and water. Pan and food!! Decent alarms so you know if you get a take at night you can be on your rods ASAP. A head torch is also very handy when sorting a fish and your rods at 3am!! Providing you already have the actual 'fishing stuff' (rods reels etc) I think that's about it mate. Sorry if any of that seems too obvious, but I've forgotten the simple things before on an over nighter and it can take the enjoyment out of it!! Hope that helps!?? Dash!

Cheers for the reply mate! I'm actually looking at getting a set of new rods / reels soon too so this isn't going to be as cheap as I hoped, who needs food anyway ;D fortunately I've got a lot of the cooking stuff and head torches from camping which will save a few £££ but definitely going to get a decent bivvie and bedchair like you said! I'm going to end up spending more on feeding the carp than I do for myself though Indy

In my opinion you don't need to spend £££'s on rods and reel!! Mine are fairly cheap and have landed carp to almost 25lb from Mallard with no real issues!! (I have chub snooper rods(how less than £50) and shimano ST6000 reels £40ish)
It's worth 'investing' in the bivvy, bedchair and sleeping bag, they'll last a long time!!
I've found with everything else, I got a cheap version to tide me over (stove etc) and then upgraded as and when I can...... Doing that also gives you a chance to see how you get on with kits, and upgrade to something you'll wanna keep and not change again after 2 sessions!!

Sounds like what I'm going to have to do, those rods & reels are in my kind of price range at the moment until my student grant comes in ;D I can always upgrade though like you say mate. To be honest I'd never really fished a water as clear and weedy as mallard until the other day so it's all quite new to me, like I said I've only really been carp fishing properly for a year or so and even then it's on day ticket runs waters easier than mallard but I like the idea of stepping up to something like this. Need to invest in a marker setup too me thinks, another dent to the wallet though!

Cheers mate, seems like a great deal! Although shouldn't marker reels be filled with braid?! I'll give them a ring though and see what they say!

Hi Indi Depending on how many sessions you intend doing on Mallard it might be worth a look at buying a season ticket, which are £100 day only, or £195 day/night, which runs 12months from date of purchase.

Hi Jon, I am considering it but as of September I'm moving down to sunny Swansea for uni so I'll only be back here for a few weeks at Xmas, Easter and then all of the summer so I'm not sure yet if it's worth me getting a season ticket just for the summer. I am tempted to though

You only need to do about 13 overnighters to make it worth it!! Soon get through that if you do 48hr sessions (or longer!!) ;-)

That's true, if I can get my new tackle soon then I'll consider it. Hopefully I'll meet some people down there on the bank, none of my mates take fishing as seriously as myself!
