Hello, For the last few years I have been living in Northern Scotland and at the end of August I will be coming down to visit family and will be looking to spend a day on one of the lakes and get some proper fishing done rather than swooshing a rod and line about over my head ;D while wearing tweed Perhaps Coot, Swan or Car Park. I am no specimen or match angler but purely a leisure man so which lake will offer me a productive day that will put a little bend in my rod and how should it be fished? I missed the boat when it came to all these modern baits so am a little nervous or will I be just as well fishing with maggot/worm/corn/bread? As a leisure man, what day "could" I expect from these 3 lakes? in anticipation...thanks

swan is a great lake for carp into double figures on cubes of meat and they really pull back. Being predominantly a carp angler ive never really tried for any of the silver fish but talking to some of the matchmen around, all the baits you mentioned will work if presented right. if u are unsure about anything the bailiffs are very helpful and will always point you in the right direction.

Thanks for that. I missed the boat on "modern bait" fishing spending all my youth float fishing my local carp pond that had commons, crucian and tench all in the 1-4lb range and this was always on float with maggot/corn or floating crust up against the lilly pads so will be finding my feet again 25 years later.

Carpark lake is also a good starting point, especially for float fishing!! I'm sure you'll hook a few in there!! Maggot, corn and bread should get some bites!! But it is def worth giving the bailiffs a call!! They're great and helpful guys and will put you on the right path!!!

Foxing the carp is always good on a feeder/ledger when you hear the screaming run and the rod gets a proper bend but I also like being a modern Mr Crabtree staring at the tip of the float watching is bobble, drift about and try to work out if they are tench or carp bubbles coming up next to it anticipating when it will dip under.

Well, I made it to car park lake and I was eager to get stuck in to a days fishing. This was at the end of August and a very hot day. Fishing was tough going. Maggot being denied, bread, corn and trout pellet all going the same way and the whole day I think I saw two smallish fish taken.
Realising the silver fish werent going to sink my float and frustrated at seeing the commons and mirrors cruising up and down, I threw some bread crust on to a size 8 and waited. My polaroids came in dead handy and it wasn't long before I spotted them again. Quickly threw out the crust and wham! Over the rod tip goes and I soon have a 7lb bronzed common. 30 minutes later I have the same result but with a 6lb mirror. Think the regulars were miffed of my success as it wasn't long before they were seeing what they could do with the remains of their sandwiches but they had no success.
Overall it was a good day but a little disappointed on the silver fish sport. Was it a bad day or is this how the pool fishes?
I am no specimen hunter but should I have tried a different lake?
I was also disappointed to see that when a few packed up they all turned in pints and pints of bait and ground bait into the lake. Surely this cannot be good for a lake of this size and as a lad this was a practice forbidden at my local club where we fished ponds that were of a similar size to car park lake.
