[glow=red,2,300][/glow]I've started a thread I seen on another forum about the use of fake baits, plastic corn/maggots etc etc. I'd like to know what your thoughts are on this!!! Lets say you have toped your boillie off with a bit of yellow corn, you cast out and track off/lose it on a snag and so on!! The snaged 'fake bait corn rig is prob worst of all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its just sitting there wait for a carp to come along and take it. Its never gona brake down like a boillie does!! And for that reason alone I believe fisheries should ban them. I guess there's only one question to ask.................Does it bother you using fake baits & if you lose your end tackle to a snag/crack off? ??

Good thread this one Dodge I myself do use fake corn as a tip for the the boilie, and have asked myself that very same question " what if I crack off and leave it out there" which up to this date has never happened, although I do only tend to use it in France which isn't to say its less important there as fish saftey should always be first on anglers minds no matter where you fish. I really don't know how to answer it, I have had some of my best catches using it, I think its down to the individual to make a choice.

I've bined all my fake baits this morning. From here on in, if i want to top my hookbaits I shall be doing so with half a 10mm pop-up! Job done & doing the thing as plastic corn BUT fishing safely!!!

IMO the rig on the left is not safe with the fake plastic bait! The rig on the right though is doing the same thing your trying to achieve with the plastic topped bait rig!! BUT THIS ONE IS SAFE. It can brake down if you was to crack off/lose the rig etc etc. A cut down 10mm pop-up is all it takes.

The only thing id say aout the rig on the right, is a trimmed down pop up will take on water alot quicker, rendering it "non" bouyant.....i would possibly think about using a small (say 10mm) pop up that hasnt been trimmed dowm to sustain the neutral bouyancy.

I do see what you are saying and yes I did use them on one rig!!
I had no issues.....if rigs are tied properly you shouldn't lose them.
So I don't think I'll stop using them just yet!!
Still seeking a modest 15lb+!!!

Rigs tied the right way will not stop crack offs or getting snapped up mate, thus leaving the plastic out there just waiting to get pick up . But its your call mate I bined around 40 odd bits of fake baits the other day. alot not even used. didnt want to sell it

Think about it another way then mate....
We spend time balancing and adding weight in order to get the hook into the fishes bottom lip!
If you have a crack off etc, and having set up a safe rig..... at some point there will be no counter weight.... leaving a hook, fake bait and maybe a small hook length.
If a carp does pick this up, it will spit it back out and it is very unlikely to catch hold....
So theres not really an issue then is there??

I see it like this mate......... You cast out a rig with say a 14mm boillie topped off with plastic corn! You lose the rig thru snag under water! The rig will be sitting there with the said bait on the hair! A carp comes along and takes the bait BUT it can't free it self because of the snag! Now 2 things are go a happen to that carp....PANIC/STRESS THEN DIE!!!! Because it can't swim free from the snagged up rig!!!

i dont use "fake baits" very often but imho they r as safe as u make them! e.g i dont fish at any real long range so chances of "cracking off" are greatly reduced, but even so should it happen in open water there r far fewer snags, therefore nothing to teather a fish should it pick up a lost rig and little resistance so shedding the rig would b no problem.
also i wont use them fishing towards marginal snags as 9 times out of 10 a hooked fish will run straight through them increasing chances of getting smashed up and leaving the hook bait dangling invitingly waitin to teather the next fish to come along!
i guess in short what im saying is, with a little common sense they can b a valuable addition to our arsenal

just out of interest i did a few tests to see how much force it takes to pull an avid "corn stop" off a rig once the boilie is gone, on a rig tied with IQ2 flurocarbon in 12lb they do pull clear fairly easily but in future i would damage the hook on the stop first as it does pull free much easier.
or,
using a longer hair u could double it back through the bait so the knotted loop sits hook side of the bait, leaving you with a "U" shaped hair to hook the stop to. once the boilie breaks down this would leave the plastic corn completely unattached to the rig which solves all the issues i think
In fact the later is the way i will use fake baits in the future!!
